Everywhere else its spring but in Hanover the duckboards float on the Green. March and April have a way of testing whatever feelings you have for the place. Do undergraduates still call it "schlump"? For something sunnier, consider the more recent accomplishments of four classmates below.

Howard Abrams won the Evansville, Indiana, 2008 Mayors Arts Award for his work as "an exemplary citizen for the arts." He chaired Evansvilles redevelopment commission with particular interest in the Evansville Arts Council and worked as a volunteer and board member for the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, the University of Evansville Theatre Society and the Evansville Museum, among other arts organizations.

Mike Smith was the recipient of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundations 2008 Lilla McLane-Bradley Award for his instrumental role in conserving hundreds of acres of farm and forest land.

Dr. Chic Shaver, former Frank and Gladys Cooper professor of evangelism at Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri, received the Distinguished Service Award from World Mission Literature, Nazarene Missions International. His book, Basic Bible Studies, has been translated into 50 languages.

The American Classical Music Hall of Fame selected Cincinnati Pops conductor Erich Kunzel as one of its five inductees for 2008.

Bob Goodman, an experienced business litigator, has begun a new legal conflict assessment service to help those caught up in complex legal circumstances who need guidance about the effectiveness of their legal representation.

Even though they couldn't make it to Homecoming for the first time in years, Tom and Sue Schwarz hosted a pre-Thanksgiving lunch for nearby classmates at their house in the Berkshires. Those in attendance: Bruce Bernstein and Lita Moses, Bill and Roz Gerschell, Ted and Sally Jennings, Dick and Sue Burch, and Bill and Ann Edgerton. Calling to say hello during the afternoon were Bob Marchant, Herb Roskind and Joe Stevenson.

Jim Taylor, president of the Dartmouth Club Officers Association, writes, "Together Dartmouth alumni form a group of gregarious, heterogeneous achievers. The best way to find one another? Your local Dartmouth club, for many of us our primary connection to the College. Many graduates of other colleges wonder about the magical allegiance to Dartmouth that so many of us have. The club system plays a major role in fostering that loyalty, so I urge you to give your local club a try."

Garvey Clarke is president of the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota, and Jules Rose one of the members. Bob Marchant—that wearer of many hats, all apparently green— is president of the Dartmouth Club of Southeastern Connecticut. The club of Cape Cod numbers among its officers Jim Taylor, John Citron and Rod Hinkle, while its executive committee includes Jack Cramer and Howie Howland. Rod adds that there are so many '57s in leadership positions "perhaps because the membership is so used to '57s running the show."

In other words, old friendships persist and new ones deepen, even in a room with its fair share of septuagenarians. More on '57s active in clubs in the near future.
