Hanover had lots of snow this winter, but not always at the right time. It wasn’t fair that after the students had worked tirelessly in the center of the Green to create a replica of the Moosilauke Lodge, a warm spell the day before Carnival devastated their efforts. Sculpting all night, they tried to turn their melting lodge into a twin-peaked mountain—at least that’s what the result was supposed to be.
Dartmouth is much in the news these days. Congratulations to Kristen Rutnick Gillibrand ’88, the new senator from New York, and to Timothy Geithner ’83, who replaces Henry Paulson ’68 as Secretary of the Treasury. The College starred again when ABC World News Tonight on January 30 featured Milton Ochieng ’04 and Fred Ochieng ’05 as “Persons of the Week.” The brothers, who are training to be physicians, have established a medical clinic in their home village in Kenya. Finally, congratulations to the Dartmouth Outing Club, oldest in the nation, for becoming a venerable 100-year-old this year.
On a more personal level, our son Rob ’84 had an exciting sailing adventure last November. He and three Finnish friends sailed from Jamestown, Rhode Island, to Bermuda after long delays because of Hurricane Paloma. Seas were rough but they enjoyed the company of pods of dolphins and the excitement of a flying fish crashing into their mast at midnight, “scaring the hell out of the night shift.”
