The Dartmouth Winter Carnival is now history. While the Big Green prevailed on the slopes against traditional rivals Middlebury, UNH and UVM, the centerpiece ice sculpture on the Green fell victim to a warming spell. No January thaw this year. It has been a rugged winter—lots of snow and low temps but the short thaw we had came as the sculpture was taking shape. The College and town effort to restore it was unsuccessful.

Speaking of snow sculptures, does anyone remember the DOC’s Indian brave and the mermaid in front of Robinson? A classic. Also, regarding the DOC, we read an article in the Valley News sports section on the 100 years that the DOC has existed and its defining image of Dartmouth as the college in the northern wilderness.

The recent mailing on our reunion assures us that name badges will be in big letters. Not a bad idea. Also, the list of ’49ers planning to attend is missing some who I believe plan to be there. Still time, but the committee needs close numbers for best plans.

The array of events includes the annual choral concert at Spaulding Auditorium on Monday evening by the University Chorus of the Upper Valley. This singing group was started by Ort Hicks as an alumni glee club. When the College Glee Club was not available for the reuning classes in 1994, the new singing group was asked to step in. It did and took off from there. As time saw the group become a fixture for the College and the Upper Valley, its membership included nearly half from other institutions. A name change resulted in the current, more inconclusive, name. Current and past members of our class include Ed Clogston, Vail Haak, Ort Hicks, Chet Palmer, John Stearns, Gordon Thomas, George Hartmann and Dean Merrill.

The Valentine’s Day edition of the Norwich Inn luncheon group saw a dozen gather to chat and dine. First-time attendees included class honorary member Rod Vitty and wife Pat. Conversation subjects included our nonmarching band, College layoffs and the threat of a renewal of the lawsuit against the College by concerned alumni.

Our class numbers have been shortened with the deaths of Nestor James Sullivan, John Richard Hodgens and Geoffery C. Farnum.
