The winter season kicked off here with a cocktail party sponsored by the local Dartmouth club. Class of ’50s present were Joe and Eva Sardella (their daughter Joanne ’83 is the club secretary), the Chamberlains and the McIlwains (Bob is the club treasurer). Bad weather in Boston prevented the featured speaker from getting out of Hanover. This led to impromptu observations from members and illuminated guests on some of the reasons for the financial fiasco that has beset the nation. Joan McIlwain, favoring a still tender knee replacement, observed what an outstanding fellow is Ro and Walt Lindenthal’s son John, who is head of anesthesia at our local hospital. I had to coax from Bob the fact that he was a member of the track team at the Haverford School, which this winter named him to its athletic hall of fame.
Our president Tommy Ruggles reports that Nob Hovde and Harry and Mary Lou Van Benschoten are working on a February or March 2010 class reunion in Naples, Florida. More on that later. We were disappointed that Gerry and Ginny Sarno’s anticipated visit to Vero Beach, Florida, was sidelined by Gerry’s new right knee and Ginny’s vacation in the Beverly, Massachusetts, hospital following a fall. Dolph Cramer reports that the Model T Ford that he bought for $50 from a junkyard in Norwich, Vermont, in 1947 is in superb condition. Dolph, accompanied by a “car restorer” plans to join 54 other Model T owners at New York City Hall in Manhattan on June 14. Mostly avoiding main highways, they plan to finish 35 days later in Seattle! Motel stops along the way have been prearranged. Dolph’s comment, “A ridiculous adventure and, of course, I signed up.” For more, check the tour’s Web site at www.oceantoocean-in-a-t-llc.com.
The National Association of Industrial and Office Properties recently honored the memory of Bob Mauk both for his dedication to the real estate industry and for his monumental contribution to human society through the organization he founded, Winners Walk Tall. The award was accepted and acknowledged by Bob’s son Andy.
