When it came to identifying Donald C. Berwick ’54, Tu’55, in our last issue, we blew it: Our “Newsmakers" department reported that he was the newly named administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Although a Dr. Donald Berwick had indeed been named to the post, the appointee is a Harvard guy.

How did such a stupid mistake get by us? Simply put, our blowout preventer failed. And we failed you, our readers. We are working to ensure it doesn’t happen again. We deeply regret our unintentional identity theft.

“It was nice being a celebrity for a few days,” Dartmouth’s Don Berwick told us over the phone from Newport, New Hampshire. “I’m quite proud of him,” added his wife, Ginny, “even though he’s not working for the Obama administration.” (Berwick retired in 1998 from the trucking company he founded, Berwick & Sons Inc.)

Coincidentally, the paths of the two Don Berwicks have crossed before—Dr. Berwick was on the team at Children’s Hospital Boston that successfully operated on the College alum’s then-12-year-old daughter, Kathleen, in 1988.

Dr. Berwick also has long-standing ties to Dartmouth. He has worked with and is a vocal advocate for Dartmouth Medical School’s Dr. Jack Wennberg and Dr. Elliott Fisher and their work on the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care.

Also in the Sept/Oct issue the 2009 football team record was misstated. The team finished 2-8.
