The fall semester is well under way and the students in the class of 2016 have been welcomed to the Dartmouth family at club events held around the globe. The Dartmouth Club of Central Massachusetts held a highly successful annual send-off picnic at the beautiful Wachusett Mountain Ski Lodge. Thirty-five people attended including alumni; current students from the classes of 2013, 2015 and 2016; and family members. It was the best-attended picnic in recent years and all enjoyed grilled food and great conversation on a sunny late summer afternoon. Cheers go to Bob Sauer '66, Th'68, Tu'68, Dave Rier '73 and Lance Lazar '86 for all of their hard work to organize the event. The Dartmouth Club of Long Island welcomed the incoming '16s at its annual dinner at Westbury Manor. Club president Colleen Haskell '94 commented that, 'Parents Neil and Susan Greenberg did a great job planning the event and the club was once again graced with guest speaker professor Donald Pease. Professor Pease inspired the dinner guests with his insight on Dr. Seuss and The Lorax as he related the book to the exciting transition ahead for the '16s." This club also held a wonderful sunset cocktail party at Prime Restaurant in Long Island that was organized by Chris Mitchell '95 and his wife, Ali Ruff Mitchell '95. The party attracted 40 attendees, including a wide range of alumni spanning the years of 1953-2010. Another notable event for this club was a visit from the Big Green Bus to the Cradle of Aviation Museum this summer, when the club welcomed 13 traveling students. Club members and guests were able to tour the bus and learn about the environmental goals of the studentrun group and how they use vegetable oil as their fuel source. Dartmouth pride was in fulleffect as Diane Gardella Rocco '94 helped nourish the crew with some delicious Dartmouth green bagels. On the West Coast, the Dartmouth Club of Orange County welcomed its incoming freshmen at a party hosted by John Hueston '86 and his wife, Mae Hueston '86. Club co-president Marlene Sheehan Dandier '98 reported that the club assembled a team to participate in a walk for the Maddie James Foundation, which is a charity founded by Collie James '93. The event raised funds that will be used to build a seaside learning center for young children. This club had a great reason to celebrate this summer as club member Ed Gerson '35 turned 98 and the club organized a black-tie birthday party in his honor. There was also a stargazing event, which was hosted by Andres Dandier '97. The alumni in this club continuously show their Dartmouth pride by organizing and hosting a variety of events throughout the year. As we head into the late fall and holiday season, there are sure to be many club events going on around the globe. Send in the updates to the e-mail address below so that the alumni volunteers in your club can be acknowledged for their hard work. This column is also a great way for club members to get new ideas for events that may be of interest in their area. Share the news!
