In addition to an intercollegiate baseball team, Dartmouth in the late 19th century boasted four “Class Nines”—ball teams fielded by each class. This 1884 photo shows that year’s champions, the seniors. The team manager (middle, wearing jacket) displays a rosewood bat, a common trophy of the era. Meanwhile the College team that year finished “at the tail of the league,” according to The Dartmouth.
