Image Preservation

The Hood Museum has acquired the archive of photojournalist James Nachtwey 70 (above). The collection includes hundreds of thousands of negatives, digital images, contact sheets and prints of his work from war zones around the world. Nachtwey’s “signature style is disconcerting and powerful,” says Hood director John Stomberg. The photographer will work with museum staff to organize the archive and work on new exhibitions and other projects in and out of the classroom. “The archive has been valued between $10 and $15 million, much of which comes to the College as a gift,” says Stomberg.

Eye on the Connecticut

>>> “The river is a hidden gem,” says VP of campus planning and facilities Lisa Hogarty. That’s why College planners are considering how to create connections from the middle of campus to the Connecticut River. Still in the conceptual phase, west end planning could create “a route from the Green to the river,” says Hogarty, and add more green space. The plan also strives to make the west part of campus “more pedestrianand bike-friendly,” she adds. Some of the plans could call for the removal of the River Cluster residence halls, but nothing has been set. “We’re thinking about the future before we put buildings and other improvements in place,” says campus planning director Joanna Whitcomb.
