FLAMES DOUSED
Hanover firefighters dealt with a 6:16 a.m. alarm in early July when an accident with electrical equipment sparked a fire in a building that houses Tuck students. No injuries were reported.
CLUSTER GROWTH
Three new academic clusters have been announced, bringing the total to 10. The new clusters are Cybersecurity, Technology, and Society; Precision Medicine for Cystic Fibrosis; and Arctic Engineering in a Period of Climate Change.
YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING
Bored at Baker, the anonymous online social forum that’s been a source of troubling posts and personal attacks by students in the past, has returned. It had been unavailable since October 2015.
ABRUPT END
Women’s lacrosse head coach Amy Patton resigned in early July following an investigation that deemed her conduct “inconsistent with the standards of Dartmouth athletics,” according to athletics communication director Rick Bender. Patton spent 26 years coaching at the College.
THE HIGH LIFE
A can of Miller Beer, left as a time capsule in Kiewit’s basement in 1977 by student systems programmers, apparently sprung a leak a few years ago. Although it wasn’t supposed to be “opened” until 2077, it is now drained—and still housed in Rauner Special Collections.
COURT APPEARANCE
A temporary building called a Sprung structure has been constructed on the two tennis courts near Memorial Field, next to the gym. Made of a fabric membrane stretched over a metal frame, it will serve as a living room space for the South and North Park house communities.
IN MEMORIAM
The family of Alana Donohue ’18 is establishing a scholarship fund in her honor. Donohue died from anaphylaxis on June 23 at her home in New York City.
STILL LIFE
Nine student artists won awards in a contest to render depictions of the campus Robert Frost statue donated two decades ago by the class of 1961. Cash stipends were awarded to winners in the disciplines of photography, sculpture, painting and drawing.
BUCKET LIST
Annette Denekas ’18 drew up a Sophomore Summer bucket list for “Dartbeat,” The Dartmouth’s daily blog. On it: streak through the sprinklers on the Green at night, go to a drive-in movie in Fairlee, Vermont, and picnic in a canoe. She planned to do all 13 activities on her list during the summer.
A MATTER OF STYLE
The Associated Press’ latest stylebook uses Dartmouth as an example. It calls for capitalizing the word “College” when “part of a proper name.” As in Dartmouth College.
CAN I GET YOUR AUTOGRAPH?
Ben Lovejoy ’06 made an appearance in Hanover August 1 with the Stanley Cup, which his former team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, won in June. (He recently signed with the New Jersey Devils.)
FIELD NOTES
Memorial Field and ScullyFahey Field were resurfaced during the summer. The FieldTurf is replaced every 10 years.
QUOTE/UNQUOTE
If one can get past the racism and blatant disregard for the Constitution, the remarkable thing is how flabbergastingly ignorant Trump is about contemporary terrorism and counterterrorism.”
—Dickey Center director and former U.S. State Department counterterrorism coordinator Daniel Benjamin
