Clubs & Groups

Dartmouth clubs and groups have been busy, as usual, with new activities and fun gatherings.

Amanda Rosenblum ’07, co-vice president of the Dartmouth LGBTQIA+ Alum Association

(DGALA), reported that DGALA and the Dartmouth Asian Pacific American Alumni Association (DAPAAA) hosted a dim sum gathering at Nom Wah Tea Parlor in New York City to celebrate Lunar New Year. The event was cosponsored by the Native American Alumni Association of Dartmouth (NAAAD), the Black Alumni of Dartmouth Association (BADA), and Women of Dartmouth and had nearly 30 people in attendance spanning 50 class years.

Stephanie Yu ’97 shared that in January the DAPAAA board elected Sharon Cho ’17 and Sonia Qin ’19 co-chairs and Sarah Gupta ’19 as co-chairelect for the 2020-22 term. Ariel Xue ’08 is immediate past co-chair. Stephanie Yu has stepped off the DAPAAA board after nearly four years of service in the co-chair position.

Barry Weeks ’72, executive director of the Dartmouth Club of New York (DCNY), wrote in to share information about the DCNY’s events in

December. The club packed the Roof Top Dining Room at the Yale Club for the DCNY’s 250th charter day and holiday celebration on December 13, 2019. This was also the same date as the conclusion of 250th anniversary festivities in Hanover. Some 220 alums and guests enjoyed the camaraderie, cocktails, three customized 250th cakes, and songs by the Brovertones. DCNY president Charles Allison ’78 reviewed the yearlong celebration of Dartmouth’s 250th on campus and around the world. Charles thanked vice president Katie Christ ’11, treasurer Evan Azriliant ’87, Barry Weeks, and key volunteer Christine Min ’09 for making this December 13 celebration such a success. To everyone’s delight, Charles introduced WWII Marine veteran Col. Jonathan de Sola Mendes ’42, who was wearing his freshman beanie underneath his class of’42 cap!

On October 20 the Dartmouth Club of Eastern New York (DCENY) celebrated the College’s 250th anniversary with a Big Green affair and “Call to Service” volunteer project at the Northeast Regional Food Bank near Albany, New York. Event organizer Nathan Bruschi ’10—along with Bob Conway ’73, Ryan Wheeler ’06, Th’07, Jean Nelson ’74, Roanna Wang ’13, and Stephen Muller ’71—sorted and boxed 4,500 pounds of frozen meats, fish, pizzas, entrees, and desserts donated by local commercial food suppliers. The food boxes were later picked up by local soup kitchens, homeless shelters, women’s shelters, and other social service institutions. On November 9,17 DCENY and Princeton alumni and guests bused from Albany to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx for the 100th Dartmouth-Princeton football game. Charlie Buchanan ’53 coordinated the event for the group, which included Mary Frances Sabo ’86, Bob Conway, Douglas Buchanan ’81, Clare Buchanan Lowery ’83, Bruce Barach ’78, and Jean Nelson. A gourmet tailgate lunch was enjoyed before joining more than 21,000 fans to watch the Green defeat the Tigers.

Caroline M. Wayner ’88, president of the Dartmouth Club of Maryland, reported that the club is holding its spring Big Green affair on March 22 at the Guinness Brewery in Halethorpe, Maryland. The visit to Guinness’ only brewery in North America will include a tour and tasting. Thanks to Alexis Lim ’11, the club’s young alumni chair, for organizing.

Tara Gulla ’95 wrote in with information about the Dartmouth Club of Suburban New Jersey’s recent event. Jon Rabinowitz ’74 organized the club’s annual seminar on the campus of Princeton University in early February titled “Is Dartmouth a Religion?” Dartmouth professor of religion Susan Ackerman ’80 led the seminar and based the discussion on her own research and a recent course for Dartmouth’s 250th anniversary. The event had more than 50 attendees from the Dartmouth Club of Suburban New Jersey, the Dartmouth Club of Princeton, the Dartmouth Club of Philadelphia, and Women of Dartmouth.

I hope everyone is having a fun spring and summer. Please remember to send me updates about the great events that your club, association, or affiliated group has organized.
