THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT CABIN & TRAIL AND ITS FOUNDER
CREWS WORK
Founded 100 years ago by Sherman Adams, class of 1920, Cabin & Trail operates as part of the Dartmouth Outing Club. Members not only hike great distances on all kinds of terrain, they also maintain more than 50 miles of the Appalachian Trail (from Hanover to Mount Moosilauke) and take care of 12 College cabins north of campus.
FEET OF STRENGTH
Adams, a prolific hiker to say the least, competed with other students to log the most miles on foot in a day, term, and year. He logged 339 miles his junior year and 413.5 as a senior. At 5-foot-7, Adams was “a living refutation of the theory that long legs are essential to fast walking,” wrote one observer.
WHO’S OVERACHIEVING NOW?
One mid-winter as a student, Adams scaled Mount Washington on three consecutive days. Temperatures during his final descent fell to 20 below—in a blizzard. True story.
A REFLECTIVE GRADUATE
“Upon acquiring the sheepskin, which was whisked into a trunk and has not been seen since, I went into the woods of Ludlow Mountain in Vermont scaling logs,” Adams wrote after leaving the Hanover Plain. He eventually became a politician.
POLITICAL TRAIL
Adams served as governor of New Hampshire (1949-53) and as President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s chief of staff—the first time that title was used. Adams resigned after he accepted gifts from a business executive accused of violating Federal Trade Commission regulations.
