Social media may offer diagnoses.
Researchers have developed artificial intelligence (AI) that can more accurately discern mental disorders based on social media posts. They trained the new AI model to identify emotional states—such as joy, anger, sadness, or fear—based on the content of the posts. They learned that mapping patterns in a person’s emotional state from post to post, rather than simply relying on content in a post, offers a clearer way to pinpoint problems such as anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. Xiaobo Guo, Adv’24, who worked with computer science prof Soroush Vosoughi, remotely presented the research at a recent conference.
