When Chariots Ruled the Green
During the 1960s, chariot racing took root during Green Key Weekend. The tradition, shown here in 1975, involved fraternities constructing chariots—unsteady and unbalanced—which they would haul around a track on the Green while being assailed by eggs, condiments, flour, and other debris. The races came to a grinding halt by the late 1980s. Green Key Weekend, meanwhile, has evolved from its start in 1899 to a celebration of spring on campus—a great excuse for students and alums alike to enjoy fair weather and live music.
