CHICAGO PLANS NATIONAL DARTMOUTH POW-WOW
November 1923

February 22 and 23, 1924, are the dates set for the First National Dartmouth Pow-Wow — the first great annual gathering and reunion of Dartmouth Alumni of all classes. The place is Chicago, and the alumni out there are already up to their ears in plans and preparations.

A meeting that will break all known records for alumni attendance — at least outside of Hanover — is the definite goal, and nearly 400 members of the Chicago Association have pledged themselves to achieve it or die trying. Strong representation from every class and every alumni association in the country will be counted upon, and groups from Dartmouth centers within a day or night's journey of Chicago are already promising to turn out in full force.

Dartmouth alumni who are members of the National Education Association will find the dates conveniently arranged to correspond with those of their annual convention, which comes the week following, also in Chicago. This brings together annually from 150 to 200 Dartmouth educators from all parts of the country and a one hundred percent representation at the first great national gathering of Dartmouth men is confidently expected.

Henry H. Hilton '90, former member of the Board of Trustees, is the author of this plan for an annual meeting of Dartmouth alumni to be held in some city reasonably accessible to all.

Most Dartmouth men have been impressed with the failure of class reunions at five-year intervals to give them back in full measure the college of their time, this being due, of course, to the absence of members of adjoining classes — the three that went before and the three that came after — who played such an important part in four years life at Hanover.

The plan that Hilton proposed to the Alumni Council last year and which was officially endorsed at the June meeting in Hanover opens the way to a great reunion of the members of all classes.

It also offers a real opportunity for a thorough discussion of Dartmouth affairs, bringing together, as it will, college officers, trustees, representatives from the faculty, members of the various representative alumni bodies and the alumni themselves from all sections of the country.

The action of the Alumni Council in endorsing the Hilton plan was followed immediately by its acceptance of the invitation of the Chicago Alumni Association urging that it be permitted to hold the first national meeting in that city. The fact that Mr. Hilton is a member of the Chicago group was not overlooked in making the selection, although its easy accessibility to a majority of the alumni was the paramount consideration.

President Hopkins is one of the heartiest supporters of the plan for a national meeting and he has already assured the Chicago alumni that he will attend and deliver the principal message from the college. One of the great problems confronted by the Administration today is the difficulty of carrying the news from Hanover to the many alumni organizations scattered about the country, and therefore an annual meeting of the sort that will be inaugurated next February in Chicago is very welcome.

As a result of several meetings called during the summer by Henry K. Urion '12, president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Chicago, a permanent organization has been effected for the task of promoting the national meeting, raising the necessary funds and arranging the thousand and one details upon which success depends.

Nathaniel Leverone '06, has been made chairman of the general committee; Warren D. Bruner '12, secretary, and Bertrand C. Wheeler '11, treasurer. It will be the duty of this committee to prepare a budget and exercise supervision over the activities of the various other committees.
