Provision for the ratification of candidates for the captaincies of Dartmouth teams before their election has been made by the Athletic Council. The new ruling, which supersedes the old method of ratifying the choice of the letter men, took the form of an.amendment to the by-laws of the Council.
The amendment reads as follows: "Immediately after the award by the Athletic Council of the insignia in any branch of sport, it shall be the duty of the manager of that sport to submit to the Council for its approval a list of candidates for the captaincy of that team for the ensuing season. After one or more such candidates have been approved by the Athletic Council, the manager shall call a meeting of all members of the team, who shall then, by majority vote, elect a captain from the list of approved candidates. The manager shall preside at this meeting, and in case of a tie shall cast the deciding vote."
The Council also provided that in case a vacancy in the captaincy of any sport existed before or during the season, no election by the members of the previous or present team shall be held except upon a list of candidates approved by the Council.
A special by-law was passed in regard to the election of baseball captain as follows: "In the case of baseball, the manager shall submit a list of candidates for captain to the Council at its Commencement meeting; and the election of captain shall not be held until after such meeting, but may be held before the formal award of insignia by the Council, subject to the review of the Council if necessary."
