Dartmouth football fans received a bitter blow during the spring recess when a report came through from Latta, South Carolina, that Dartmouth's 1953 football captain, Bayard Johnson, and Dartmouth fullback Stan Clark were injured when their car, in which they were returning to Hanover following a Florida vacation, overturned. Johnson was unconscious for over 36 hours from a serious head injury and at this writing has been removed to a Detroit hospital, while Clark escaped with minor cuts and abrasions. It is not known whether the injury to Johnson will prevent his leading the Big Green on the gridiron next fall, but our fingers are crossed for one of the pluckiest and ablest players to wear the Dartmouth uniform.

Dartmouth's sophomore skiing ace, Ralph Miller, who won the North American and National Downhill events and placed high in the slalom for top combined honors, capped his winter achievments on the slopes by being named "Skier of the Year" by the U. S. Eastern Amateur Ski Association. This is the first vear that such an award has been made.

Once again this spring an informal rugby team from Dartmouth, composed largely of football players and led by Pete Reich, journeyed to Bermuda to play in three contests. The Indians lost the opener in a rain storm to a British Naval Station team, 3-0, and then battled Harvard to a 6-6 tie, which, by the flip of a coin after an overtime failed to produce a score, was turned into a Dartmouth win. But Yale, defending tournament champions, had little difficulty halting the injury-riddled Indians 11-0 in the final.

Coach Karl Michael's Dartmouth swimmers rounded out the winter season in very satisfactory fashion when, in the latter part of March the Dartmouth relay team of Captain Chuck Luker, Captain-elect John Heyn, Steve Mullins and John Glover finished fifth in the 400-yard relay at the NCAA meet in Columbus. The Big Green quartet nosed out a powerful Ohio State relay team for fifth place, which ensures Dartmouth of a rating in the Ail- American selections for the fifth consecutive year. Glover also turned in a fine individual performance to take fifth in the 50-yard freestyle against the top collegiate swimmers in the nation.

Dave Camerer '37, former Dartmouth gridiron great, has been named Director of Athletic Publicity at the University of Pennsylvania. Dave, a former sports writer for the New York World Telegram and staff worker for Pic magazine and Esquire, replaces Mort Berry.
