Dartmouth provided the setting for the first events of intercollegiate championship class ever contested in Hanover when in the Spaulding Pool, March 14 and 15, swimmers representing Brown, Dartmouth, Amherst, Williams, Wesleyan, and M.T.T. gathered for the annual New England Intercollegiate Championship meet.
Preliminary trials for the various events were run off on the first day, and 29 men qualified for the finals scheduled for the following night. Of the qualifiers Dartmouth furnished 12, Brown 8, Williams 5, and Wesleyan 4. Features of the preliminary trials were the establishment of one New England record and two new records for the Spaulding Pool. Bogart, of Dartmouth, travelling the length of the pool in 49 3-5 seconds set a New England record for the plunge event; Davey Jones, of Brown, swimming the first trial heat of the 50 yard dash in 25 1-5 seconds added another S'paulding Pool record to a list he began two years ago; Olmstead, of Williams, contributed the third record-breaking performance with a time of 1 minute 12 2-5 seconds in the 100 yard breast stroke.
At the conclusion of the meet on the following evening Dartmouth and Brown were found knotted into a tie with 32 points apiece. By regulations governing this situation the Brown team by reason of finishing ahead of Dartmouth in the relay race was awarded the championship. Previous to the relay race Dartmouth led Brown by a three point margin. Brown's first place in the relay netted eight points and Dartmouth's second position five. Of the other teams in the competition Williams scored 16 points and Wesleyan 13. Amherst and M.I.T. failed to qualify entries for the finals.
Records in the plunge and the back stroke were further lowered by Bogart, of Dartmouth, and Liliencrantz, of Williams. Bogart's plunge of the length of the pooV 75 feet, in 46 1-5 seconds marked the third time within two days that the New' England record for this event had been altered, first by Bogart, himself, on the preliminary trials, second by Jacobson, of Wesleyan, in the finals, and lastly by Bogart in his final trial. Liliencrantz added another New England record with his mark of 1 minute 12 2-5 seconds for the 100 yard back stroke. A third record was equalled when "Coles, of Brown, tied the mark set on the previous evening by Jones in the 50 yard event.
