BATES WINS 440 IN NURMI STADIUM EXHIBITION

H. N. Bates '25 won the 440 exhibition race held in the Harvard stadium May 22 in connection with Paavo Nurmi's attempt to lower the world's record for the mile. Bates caught Eric Smith, who had a 14-yard handicap, at the tape and covered the distance in 51 2-5 seconds. Ray Robertson, former world's record holder, also ran from scratch and finished third.

Nurmi ran a good mile as he promised but did not break any records being clocked in 4 minutes 15 1-5 seconds.
