TWO TEAMS AWARDED STRAIGHT LETTERS
Members of Dartmouth's championship basketball team and championship gymnasium team were awarded straight letters by the Athletic Council recently, and the basketball team received in addition gold basketballs as watch charms. This is the first time in the history of the College that straight letters have been awarded to members of either team.
The men to receive the basketball awards were: Captain J. E. Picken '27, H. S. Dey '27, T. P. Ellis '28, W. G. Heep, Jr. '28, R. E. Langdell '28, R. W. Austin '29, G. A. Hein '29, C. B. Spaeth '29, E. W. Vossler '29, and Manager A. M. Welty.
Letters were awarded only to those men who had played an equivalent to two full games in league competition. No special awards were made by the council.
Nine members of the gym team were awarded the straight "D," and for the first time in the history of the college, letters were awarded to men on the varsity water polo squad and numerals to Freshman swimmers. The election of W. G. Heep '28 to captaincy of the 1927-28 basketball team was ratified.
The election of E. Latham '30 to captain of the Freshman track team was also ratified by the council.
K. B. Michael '29 was awarded a straight "D" for his work on the swimming squad. He placed first in the diving at the Intercollegiates at New York this winter. Members of the swimming team receiving the "sDt" are K. C. Ballantyne '27, B. Langworthy '27, H. I. Russell '27, W. R. Tobey '27, G. M. Boughton '28, J. W. Bryant '29, R. H. Leigh '29, W. McCaw '29, L. B. Rogers '29 and C. A. Soriero '29.
The council has scheduled a recreational golf match with Yale at New Haven on May 14. It also announced that the rifle team will participate in the Intercollegiates on April 16.
The members of the water polo team to receive the "wDp" are A. G. McDonald '27, R. L. Marsans '27, B. W. Stone '27, F. M. Wenck '27, B. W. Brown '28 (capt.), E. B. Osborn '28, H. H. Enders '29 and H. R. Magnuson '29.
Five-inch straight "D's" were awarded to the following members of the gym team: K. B. Anderson '27, A. C. Bliss '27, J. M. Creamer '27, F. F. Kortlucke '27, D. E. Megathlin '27, W. M. Hobson '"28, L. M. Sadler '28. P. V. Russell '29 and J. I. Stewart '29. The "gDt" insignia was received by R. W. Bliss '27.
Members of the rifle team to receive the "rDt" are: J. H. Minnich '27, E. H. Worth '27, R. Keith '28, G. W. Wheland '28 and J. T. Kelley '29.
Five members of the undefeated Freshman basketball squad were awarded class numerals. They were J. G. Cheney, B. R. Lewin, F. H. Schmidt, M. G. Swarthout and F. A. Tangeman.
Freshman swimmers to receive class numerals for their work on the 1930 swimming team are W. H. Birnie and N. E. McGrath.
