"Sing Out" on June 5 will close an unusually successful year in the musical work in Rollins Chapel, where Profesor Homer Whitford directed the College Choir and did most of the organ work.
The year was especially noteworthy for the organ recitals and the special musical services. The work of the choir which is identical with the glee club, has merited and won high praise and appreciation on the part of the college community. In addition to the regular work at Sunday Vespers and at the special week-day services, Prof. Whitford, using the full choir and calling upon the most capable soloists for assistance, presented four special programs—a Harvest Festival Service before Thanksgiving, a Christmas Carol Service, An Antiphonal Service on Easter day (when the choir was divided into two sections singing from opposite ends of the Chapel) and the annual Sing Out.
The three formal organ recitals, given by Professor Whitford on the Streeter organ, elicited high commendation. The last of the three, on May 10, was a "request recital," the program being selected from about a hundred compositions suggested by undergraduates. Prof. Whitford, who has drawn on the best in organ literature, has succeeded in acquainting his audiences with some of the greatest music, and at the same time has never failed to please and to inspire. His playing is characterized by fluent technique, admirable taste and emotional sincerity and the community has been more than pleased with the consistently high level of artistic accomplishment maintained in his own work and the work under his direction.
