SECRETARIES ASSOCIATION MEETS IN HANOVER
JUNE, 1927

For the twenty-third year the secretaries of classes and associations gathered in Hanover on May 6 and 7 for their annual meeting. The favorable season at which the meeting was placed and the ever-growing interest in the sessions brought out a record attendance, fifty-six classes and eighteen associations responding to the roll call. Many of the secretaries who were not able to come personally sent greetings, including Samuel H. Jackman '60, dean of the Association and the oldest living alumnus, Major E. D. Redington '61, Rev. Henry I. Cushman '65. and Henry Whittemore '66. The oldest class represented in the person of its secretary was that of John Scales '63, the third in the seniority list of Dartmouth graduates.

Before the formal meeting started the secretaries enjoyed an informal reception as the guests of President and Mrs. Hopkins at the President's house on Webster Avenue, the first opportunity that many of them had had to meet in the residence presented to the College for the use of its presidents by Mr. Edward Tuck '62.

Alumni Magazine

The Managing Editor of the MAGAZINE Eugene F. Clark '01, and the Business Manager, Albert W. Frey '20, spoke briefly in regard to the condition of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. Mr. Clark analyzed the general content of the issue showing the large proportion of space devoted in each issue to class notes, perhaps the most valuable feature of the MAGAZINE and absolutely dependent on the activities of the secretaries.

Mr. Frey's report showed that there had been a net gain of -three hundred subscribers during the last year, making a total subscription list of 4,650, and that financially the MAGAZINE was solvent. Discussion on this subject was withheld pending the report of the Executive Committee.

Report of the Executive Committee

In behalf of this committee its chairman, Mr. Strong, presented three matters for the consideration of the Association. Following the discussion at the last meeting and its vote of reference the Committee recommended that the Association sponsor the preparation of a sixmonths calendar to be sent to all the alumni, advertising the current college events of the first half of the year and further recommended that the calendar be financed by reunion classes with such other assistance as might be obtained. It was also suggested that if the Alumni Fund could assume the cost of mailing, the estimated balance of $600 might be met from the twelve reunion classes of each year at the rate of $75 each from the five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twentyfive, and thirty year classes and $25 each from the one, three, thirty-five, forty, forty-five and fifty year classes.

This proposal provoked much discussion, particularly on the question as to whether the Secretaries Association had the authority through its representatives to definitely commit classes to such an expenditure. The general trend of the discussion indicated a feeling that such authority did not exist as a practical matter and it was' finally Voted: That the matter of a calendar be referred to the Executive Committee with authority to go ahead if the Committee finds itself able to secure funds to finance the publication.

The second proposal of the Executive Committee had to do with class subscriptions to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. The subscription list of the MAGAZINE has shown a gratifying increase and the MAGAZINE has also become more stable financially each year but even yet not many more than 50% of the graduates of the College are on. the list of subscribers and a very much smaller proportion of the non-graduates. The Executive Committee proposed that a renewed attempt be made to increase the number of unit subscriptions by classes above the fifteen classes already availing themselves of the reduced price offered for this form of subscription. The Committee proposed specifically that a special committee of ten or twelve members distributed in the ratio of approximately one member to five classes undertake to increase this form of subscription.

A full discussion was aroused, led by A. M. Garcia '12. He advocated energetically the thesis that the MAGAZINE should go to every member of the alumni body through class action if this could be done at a cost of $1 per man as seemed probable after discussion with the Business Manager of the MAGAZINE. The ensuing discussion brought many expressions favorable to Mr. Garcia's proposal but also the general feeling that the secretaries did not have the authority to commit their classes to this expense without further consultation with the class organizations. It was therefore finally

Voted: That.it is the sense of this meeting that every member of the alumni body should receive the ALUMNI MAGAZINE through class action provided this can be done at a subscription price of $1.

It was further Voted: That a committee of five to be

appointed by the president, of which Mr. Garcia shall be chairman, be empowered to put this plan into effect if it can be done through practically unanimous action in favor by the classes.

The Executive Committee likewise recommended that a survey of the constructive factors in a class be made, particularly with reference to the non-graduate membership, involving such factors as the percentage of non-graduates in each class subscribing to the Alumni Fund, attending reunions, paying class dues, or subscribing to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. The Committee pointed out that elements of strength existed in this non-graduate group which were not fully realized in many of the classes and hoped that a careful study might reveal sources of strength unsuspected before. It was therefore

Voted: That the Executive Committee be requested to make a study of the factors of non-graduate membership in the various classes and present a report at the next meeting.

The Alumni Council

Joseph W. Worthen '09

As one of its representatives on the Alumni Council Mr. Worthen outlined briefly the growth of alumni influence in the affairs of the College and in particular the organization and activities of the Alumni Council. From frequent reports the Association was familiar with much of the work of the Council but Mr. Worthen emphasized especially a rather recent development in Council activity in the work of supervising the alumni rating of applicants to Dartmouth. This report concluded the afternoon session in Parkhurst Hall.
