BOXING TEAM WINS FROM NEW HAMPSHIRE
MARCH, 1928

In its first official meet the Dartmouth boxing team won from New Hampshire University 4-2. The inter-college matches were a part of the program arranged for an Olympic benefit at the gymnasium February 4. Eddie Shevlin, former welterweight champion of New England, brought Jack Sharkey, Rocky Stone, A 1 Mello, Billy Bruinsma, and Henry Lamar to Hanover for exhibition bouts. Coach Shevlin, tutor of the Dartmouth boxers, met Mello, to whom he lost his crown two years ago, in one of the most interesting bouts of the evening.

Sharkey and Stone, one of the challengers besieging Gene Tunney for a match, went through three rounds exhibiting speed and agility, if not fighting spirit. Ernie Bessette '28 won from the captain of the N. H. team in what was the best match of the show. It was in the heavyweight division and Bessette clearly demonstrated that he is a serious contender for a place on America's Olympic boxing team.
