Upon the invitation of President Hopkins the greatest present day American etcher, Louis Orr, came to Hanover last summer and made preliminary studies for a folio of "Etchings of Dartmouth College." Proofs of four of these plates have been received and printed copies are being included as a supplement in this issue of the MAGAZINE. The folio will consist of six etchings, eight by ten inches, of the following subjects : Dartmouth Row, the doorway of Middle Massachusetts Hall, the portico of Webster Hall, Steele Chemistry Laboratory, Dick Hall's House, and the President's House. In addition there will be a title page carrying an etching of Dartmouth Hall, an index page illustrated by an etching of the Ledyard Bridge, and on the cover of the folio will be a miniature reproduction of the Baker Library tower by Mr. Orr.
The College has purchased the entire edition of these etchings which will consist of one hundred folios. Mr. Orr is at present working upon the set in Paris and when the total number is made the plates will be destroyed. Although the date of delivery can not now be determined requests for purchasing one of the completed folios may be sent to the President's Office. The subscription price is $100 per folio. Upon the completion of his studies in Hanover in August Mr. Orr said that he expected the Dartmouth etchings would be the finest collecion he has ever made. The advance proofs indicate that his prediction is being realized and the passage of a few years will undoubtedly find the folios of great value, not only, to Dartmouth alumni, but to art collectors and admirers of Louis Orr's works.
In "The Orr Echings of Yale University" and "A Folio of Williamstown Etchings by Louis Orr" the artist has already won renown for his etchings with historic buildings of American colleges as subjects. His European studies are the most famous and he has three times been commissioned by the French Government to make important etchings. For his beautiful triptych of Rheims Cathedral, sketched during the war while under fire, he was awarded the coveted Legion of Honor. Mr. Orr is the only American artist whose work is in the Louvre, and in the permanent collection of the Luxembourg galleries are thirty-three of his original drawings. Although he was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and is an American citizen Mr. Orr has made his home in Paris since his youth when he first studied there.
In an appraisal of the Williamstown etchings Kenneth Phillips Britton says:
"In this day of trans-Atlantic flights, polar voyages, and world-circling races, the combination of science, invention, and American dollars have made the task of carrying Mohammed to the Mountain a speedy and comfortable certainty: But, let the modern Mohammeds go where they will, the Mountain has retained its ponderous stability and has refused to be transplanted; scientists and inventors have failed in their attempts to take up a mountain, or a valley, or a town and set it down, miles away from its origin, before the eyes of its admirers. Scientists and inventors have failed. But an American artist has succeeded.
"As I write, on a sultry June day in Paris, when the air from the street is saturated with dust and auto-horns, Williamstown, Williams College, in all the serene dignity of elmshadowed buildings, the Berkshire fragrance, and the spirit of campus inactivity lies beside me. There it is. I feel it. I see it. I can hear the lazy murmur of many voices and a sharp call from a window under the eaves of Berkshire Hall. I can feel the sun as it slants off Griffin, the cool shadow of West College. The Mountain has come to me. Williamstown, real, living, active, lazy, contradictory Williamstown, lies in all its outward beauty and its campus spirit at my elbow, caught forever in a portfolio of etchings by Louis Orr."
The class standings for the 1928 Alumni Fund campaign follow. Classes are listed according to the percentage of quota already secured. More than $46,000 must be contributed before June 30 to reach the goal of $115,000.
