The D. O. C. held its first Annual Conference of Outing Clubs here April 27, 28. Thirty-two delegates to the conference represented all the leading men's and women's colleges in the East. The conference opened with a dinner at the Inn Friday evening at which President Hopkins announced the gift of an Outing Club House to be located at the north end of Occom Pond and to cost approximately $50,000. The House is the gift of the Class of 1900 which has been accumulating the fund since graduation to be used in providing the College with some long-needed facility.
Complete specifications for the Outing Club house as released by J. Fredrick Larson, college architect, call for a two story field-stone building with a large porch facing Occom Pond. There will be an entrance from the porch, which will be on the pond level, to the public locker and check rooms on the basement floor. Large rooms with wash bowls and showers will also be provided on this floor for both visiting teams and the Dartmouth Winter Sports team. In addition there will be space for storage and the heater. The first floor, which may be reached either from the locker rooms below or from the porch on the first floor level, will house a large living room with fireplaces at both ends. Opening from this lounge will be, in one wing a council room, and in the other wing a dinning room and kitchen, on the same level. It is planned to have a gallery built around this central living room from which access may be had to a ladies' room over the council room. On the opposite side quarters will be provided for a caretaker, over the dining room and kitchen.
Located on the north end of Occom Pond, the Outing Club house will be well situated to serve as a center for winter sports activities. It will be open only to the Outing Club members and will be used for its winter sports team and by visiting teams, as well as providing a center for recreational skating, skiing, hockey and tobogganing. The house will give facilities long needed for the greatest enjoyment of winter sports in Hanover. It is intended, by providing an attractive center for these sports, to secure even greater participation in outdoor activity during the winter months by undergraduates of the College.
