Dartmouth 72 Colgate 37 Syracuse 26
Syracuse and Colgate fell before an avalanche of Green points in the triangular track meet at Hill Field, Syracuse, May 5. The Indian athletes won seven firsts, nine seconds and ten thirds to score 72 points, against 37 for Colgate and 26 for Syracuse. Although the high-hurdles was the only track event which Dartmouth won, the Green weight men made a clean sweep of the hammer and shot. The mile was the only event in which Dartmouth failed' to place. In all others, it took either a first or a second. The Green runners showed lack of outdoor practice and the effects of the long train ride. Most of the times were slower than the trials in Hanover last week. In the mile and two mile, Dartmouth fell far below the marks set in practice. Rain fell intermittently during the meet and kept the spectators who were celebrating Moving Up Day, scampering for shelter.
In both the dashes, Trent of Colgate defeated Glendinning by less than a yard in 10 1-5 and 22 2-5 seconds. Cooley placed third in the 100 and Swope in the 220. The quarter brought together three of the best in the country. Barbuti, Orange track captain, took the lead at the start and had just enough sprint to defeat Swope, who finished fast to take second. Roll of Colgate was third. The time was 50 seconds.
The half-mile was run in a pouring rain. The Lathams set the pace for the first lap, but Barbuti and Keith took the lead on the homestretch to finish one two in 2 minutes. E. Latham was third. The mile was won by Godelle of Syracuse in 4 minutes 32 2-5 seconds. In the two-mile, Carnell and Butterworth alternated the lead until the last fifty yards when Dunbar of Colgate went ahead to win. Butterworth was second and Carnell third, close back of the leader whose time was 10 minutes 21 4-5 seconds.
Wells had little trouble winning the highhurdles in 15 2-5 seconds followed by Stollwerck of Colgate and Alcorn. The Green captain withdrew from the lows, which was won by Stollwerck with Marsters and Alcorn second and third.
Canby won the broad-jump with a leap of 22 feet 4 inches, closely followed by McQuiston. The high-jump went to Maynard at 6 feet. The javelin was won with a heave of 167 feet and 8 inches by Harden, the only Dartmouth man to place. Fyler took the discus at 125 feet 5 inches with McAvoy third. Phillips led the Dartmouth hammer-throwers with 133 feet 3 inches and McAvoy the shotputters with 3 feet 6 inches. In the hammer and shot, Lyle and Brown, and Mayher and Gow were second and third respectively. Curll placed third in the pole-vault.
