The death of Dr. J. W. Grosvenor on December 19 at his home in Buffalo, N. Y., removes one of the two surviving members of the class of 1859. At the time of his death Dr. Grosvenor was the second oldest among the living graduates of the college, having passed his 92nd birthday last July. He was a veteran of the Civil War and had been engaged in practice in Buffalo and Lockport, N. Y., during most of his active life until his retirement fifteen years ago.
His surviving classmate is Judge Roger S. Greene, now residing in Seattle, who holds the distinction of being the only alumnus now living who graduated prior to 1861. On December 14, Judge Greene celebrated his eightyninth birthday and on that occasion received congratulations from the six surviving lawyers admitted by Judge Greene to practice in all the courts of Washington territory in the early 'Bo's, being the oldest practitioners of the Seattle Bar now surviving.
A close relationship existed between Judge Greene and Dr. Grosvenor, who was the president of the class, while Judge Greene was its secretary. Writing to the Alumni Secretary under date of January 3 and speaking of Dr. Grosvenor, Judge Greene writes:
"He was one of the finest souls I have ever known and was a faithful and very public spirited citizen and true and active patriotic American. The class in honor of its deceased and beloved president this morning met at 9 a.m. and adjourned until tomorrow at 9 a.m. You may, however, Mr. Secretary, without further notice, be assured and take note, that henceforth, until I myself am called from this wonderful earth, that I, tomorrow, have been elected president of the Dartmouth class of 1859, and have had devolved upon me the duties, both of president and secretary of the class. I hope and pray for the College and you and all other of its officers, alumni, and its students, a happy New Year and prolonged lives of great and advancing usefulness."
More extended appreciation of the life and activities of Dr. Grosvenor will appear in a later issue of this MAGAZINE.
