In the nip-and-tuck swimming meet at West Point, won by Dartmouth in the final relay, 60-53, the gremlins were working overtime to make things tough for the Indians. In the 200-yard backstroke, Dartmouth's Mark Battin (a good bet for second behind his teammate Al Petersen) stopped after 50 yards, splashed mysteriously in the water, climbed out, and headed for the locker room. His swimming trunks had lost their moorings and were down around his knees. A freestyler might have kicked them off and blazed to victory, but what do you do in the backstroke?
