The retirement of Prof. William Patten, as announced by the trustees of the College following their meetings April 20, is occasioned by the traditional procedure of retiring members of the faculty from active service when they reach the age of 70. Dr. Patten came to Dartmouth as professor of Biology in 1893, the year that William Jewett Tucker became president of the College. In retiring to an emeritus position in June he will have completed 38 years of devoted service in Dartmouth's teaching corps. He stands second only to Prof. G. D. Lord in point of length of service on the faculty.
Professor Patten graduated from Harvard in 1883 and received his A.M. degree there the following vear. He was later awarded the Ph.D. degree by Leipzig University. He has been director of the freshman course in Evolution since its inception at Dartmouth in 1921. He has achieved international distinction in his chosen academic field of Zoology.
