Raw Baseball Material

Tesreau has a wealth of material besides the regulars who shone last year, but this material is so diversified and even raw, that I am afraid that a two year development will be necessary in the case of several of the sophomore stars.

On paper last February, the Dartmouth baseball team seemed pretty well set, and we who enjoy our Winter hot stove league sessions could be nothing but optimistic over the prospects, but a team on paper and a vital nine against a league opponent are two entirely different combinations. And physical condition which may result in unavailability is a warring factor against any ball team.

The Spring trip was disastrous, not because Dartmouth failed to win its three games, but because of the weather conditions which caused a washout of all the remaining contests. And wet weather, fog and rain, has a way of taking a toll in strained muscles and weary arms. The first casualty was Lauri Myllykangas, the great pitching ace of last year. Myllykangas threw his arm out against Virginia and was not able to face Yale in the league opener. At this writing he is still favoring his arm and is decidedly an unknown quantity.

Tesreau has pitchers galore this year, which is indeed a startling situation to one who has been used to seeing Dartmouth struggle through a season year after year with a two and three man staff. But these new pitchers for the most part are all sophomores and they have a lot to learn.
