Foster Memorial

The department of History of the College has published a booklet titled "The Dedication of the Herbert Darling Foster Memorial Room at Dartmouth College." This publication contains the addresses given on that occasion by Professors W. R. Waterman, C. R. Lingley, and C. D. Adams. In its pages are reproduced photographs of Professor Foster, of the room in Reed Hall which has been dedicated to him, and of the tablet placed on the walls of the room. Professor F. M. Anderson, under whose direction the Foster booklet has been published, announces that a limited number of copies are available for general distribution. Alumni who wish to secure one of these booklets are asked to write direct to Professor Anderson.

The dedication of the Herbert Darling Foster Memorial Room in Reed Hall took place on June 18. The occasion brought together many of Professor Foster's friends and former associates, including a delegation representing his classmates of 1885. Professor W. R. Waterman, chairman of the department of History, presided and spoke briefly. Short addresses were also made by Professor Charles R. Lingley, speaking for Professor Foster's colleagues of the department of History, and by Professor C. D. Adams, as the representative of President Hopkins.

In closing his tribute to Professor Foster on the occasion of the dedication of the room in June, Professor Adams said:

"Many of us gathered here today, withall our admiration for the distinguishedteacher and investigator, are impatient ofthe account of these achievements, becauseto us he was, above all, the comrade andfriend. Abounding in life, witty and fullof fun, tender in sympathy, he endearedhimself to us. The tablet which we unveiltoday to mark this room as forever his, isbut the symbol of what is written in thehistory of the College and on the tablets ofour hearts."
