Taking advantage of an extra day provided in Dean Laycock's St. Louis plans this year, the St. Louis alumni held an informal smoker in honor of the Dean on the night preceding the annual banquet, February 28.
More than twenty-five alumni assembled at the home of John L. Dellinger '14 for a get-together strikingly reminiscent of Hanover. Retiring to a section of the basement, the uninitiated were surprised to find "Co-op" signs, freshman posters, "Opening of College" bulletins, and other familiar evidences of past days blended into the background of a perfect rathskeller. When refreshments were served under the direction of Mrs. Dellinger, many an alumnus found that an increased waist-line didn't necessarily mean an increase in capacity—with the association facing the ignominy of leaving two whole apple pies and nearly a quart of ice-cream. And these new Dartmouth plates! One alumnus took it upon himself to see that not a one was touched—certainly we can't besmirch their beauty with mere food. Johnny Laffey, in true D. O. C. style, won the association championship and Mrs. Dellinger's undying love as dishwasher.
The following evening, alumni, wives, and parents attended the annual banquet held at the Hotel Kingsway. After the dinner, accompanied by Dartmouth music (very doubtful!), the Dean gave a comprehensive review of the situation in Hanover. Several of the alumni remarked upon the Dean's ability to picture in a few words campus life and at the same time to drive home the deeper meaning of the College. To those separated from Hanover by more than a thousand miles the message becomes even more impressive.
With the splendid co-operation of the Milwaukee Association, two reels of the Dartmouth movies were routed in to St. Louis just in time for showing at the dinner.
Notable among recent developments with the St. Louis Association and a principal topic of discussion at both the smoker and the banquet are plans for a St. Louis Dartmouth "Cabin," located in the Ozark foothills within reasonable distance of St. Louis. Credit for the idea is given to several D. O. C. men in the local group, who see the opportunity for extending the "Outing Club" program among alumni living far away from the College. Within another year it is hoped that the project will have taken tangible form.
The St. Louis Association wants to invite visiting alumni from other cities to join them at the weekly luncheon held on Thursday noons at the Hotel Statler.
Officers elected by the Association for the coming year are: John L. Dellinger '14, president; Philip Bassett '30, vice-president; Russell S. Hoi brook '29, secretary; Tom Curtis '32, chairman of Outing Club Committee.
