After a first half of fairly even play,Dartmouth's powerful running attackbowled over a stubborn Virginia eleven,27-0, in an intersectional contest at Hanover on October 20. With Jim Aieta, reserve halfback, stealing the show, the BigGreen again resorted to a series of devastating tackle smashes, bucks and end sweepsto gain 430 yards and 19 first downs. Thisimpressive showing on land was largelynullified, however, by a ragged aerial exhibition in which the Indians failed tocomplete a single pass in ten tries.
Virginia not only held Dartmouth incheck during the first half, but also put ona drive of its own that carried to the 16-yard line before the Green held and Handrahan ran the ball out of danger on a 52-yard dash. After a series of tackle smashesand sweeps by Chamberlain and Conti,Dartmouth's diminutive regulars, the former scored toward the end of the first period and Hagerman added the point.
In the second half the Green running attack began to click, and Aieta, who had relieved the injured Clark, advanced the ballto the 6-yard line before carrying it overtwo plays later. A few minutes later, JoeKiernan returned a Virginia punt 25 yardsto midfield and Aieta led another advanceto the 3-yard line, from which spot Kiernan scored on a spinner. The final touchdown came in the fourth quarter whenNairne fumbled after a 12-yard runthrough tackle and Kiernan scooped upthe ball and continued to the goal line.
