Freshmen From 35 States
November 1934

Dartmouth's freshman class of 707 men, the largest in the history of the College, has been assembled from 35 states, the District of Columbia and four foreign countries, it was disclosed in a recent report on geographic distribution made, public by Robert C. Strong '24, dean of freshmen and director of admissions. Massachusetts has replaced New York as the state sending most freshmen to Dartmouth, and appreciable gains have been made by Connecticut, Illinois and Pennsylvania.

This year's entering class is more widely distributed than that of last year, six more states being represented. The number of foreign students remains at five, two enrolling from Canada, one from Japan (the brother of Teruhiko Fujiyama '30), one from Spain, and one from Cuba.

Freshmen from Massachusetts total 176 this fall in contrast to 135 in last year's entering class. New York is second with 146 representatives, but is 13 below last year's leading figure of 159; while New Jersey is third with 77, a loss of five over last year. Next to Massachusetts, Connecticut has made the largest gain, 14 more being enrolled, while Illinois is close behind with a gain of 13. Among the New England states, Vermont shows a sharp decline from 19 to 5, while New Hampshire and Maine remain about the same, with 43 and 7, respectively.
