THE FOOTBALL SEASON passed, December arrived and Walter Camp put Jack Marks, Clark Tobin, Jack Ingersoll and Larry Bankart on his "Honor List," a new departure from his Ail-American team. Later, Tobin, Marks and Bankart appeared on Camp's second team. Graduate Manager H. R. Lane '07 resigned and George A. Graves '10, Manager of Varsity Track, was appointed to his place. A new system of football ticket distribution was announced by the Management to care for "the increasing interest of Dartmouth Alumni in the big football games of the fall, the enormous demand for tickets and the criticism from some quarter of the recent method of distribution of tickets." (Was it possible!)
Chinning Season ended on Chinning Day, Dec. 4th, and 166 freshmen and 14 upperclassmen were pledged by the 18 fraternities. "The Hanover Fertilizer" pink sheet Chinning Uxtry was sold on Main Street. Fraternity banquets at the Inn and Commons followed throughout the month and R. A. Crenner, W. H. Mason, L. E. Morton, R. F. Varney, J. G. Nelson, Henry D. Abbott, Marc S. Wright, Fred S. Piatt, W. C. Hardenbrook, H. T. Ball, R. E. Bauman, J. S. Gibson, R. K. Stone and J. J. Barnett responded for "The Freshmen" at their respective banquets.
The new spngbook, edited by Harry R. Wellman '07 and Edwin Osgood Grover '94, was published, dedicated to William Jewett Tucker. Ben Lang '09 was picked to coach the Basketball Team and Harry Hillman, "shortly to become coach of Dartmouth Track and Field Teams," was given a dinner in Girad's Restaurant in New York by friends, with many of the world's most famous track athletes present.
Fred Harris '11 communicated to TheDartmouth the question "What is there to do at Dartmouth in the winter" and suggested a ski and snowshoe club be formed,I to stimulate interest in out-of-door winter sports, 2. to have short cross-countryruns weekly and one long excursion eachseason (say to Mooselac), 3. to build a skijump and hold ski-jumping contests, 4. tohold a meet or field day during Februaryfor races and jumping contests. The FieldDay, each winter, might become as muchan anticipated and regular event as thespring and fall track meets. The Outing Club and Winter Carnival were the ultimate results of this idea and vision.
Snow on Faculty Pond halted hockey practice but Capt. Marston "expects the rink constructed on Alumni Oval to be ready to-morrow." Winter brought forth the College Club Smokers and the College Band, led by Arthur Pease, gave the first concert. Tobin was elected President of the College Club, his duties,—introducing speakers and arranging for their entertainment in Hanover.
