On April 4, the new coaches came down to Philadelphia to meet the alumni group here. We had two parties the first a dinner for Dartmouth men only, at which the coaches spoke. This party was held at the Dartmouth-Cornell Club.
At eight o'clock we met at the University Club, where an informal smoker was held. Plenty of beer and pretzels were on hand, and before the meeting everyone was introducd to everyone else.
Bill Pugh, our new president, called for order after all the speakers were seated at the head table with our new coaches Earl Blaik, Harry Ellinger, Andy Gustafson, and Joe Donchess. Harry Heneage was the first speaker, followed by: Jack McAvoy, Dartmouth 1928, head coach at Ursinus College; Glen S. (Pop) Warner, Temple University coach; Andy Kerr, Colgate coach; Harvey Harman, University of Pennsylvania coach; Ducky Pond, new Yale coach, who made a special trip from New Haven to be with us; Harry Stuhldreher, Villanova College coach; Lou Young, former University of Pennsylvania coach; Jing Johnson, director of athletics at Ursinus; in the absence of Fritz Crisler, Earl Baruch, former Princeton star, spoke: Bob Hall, former Yale quarterback; Swan and Winterburn, Warner's assistants at Temple; Earl Youmans, director of athletics at Temple. The following football officials also spoke: Wilmer Crowell, Charles J. McCarthy Jr., A. W. Palmer, Doc Wallis, and Ellwood Geiges; and Coach Blaik was the final speaker.
The speeches were all short and exceptionally clever and entertaining. All these men had plenty of praise for Blaik and his assistants.
It was one grand party, and the Philadelphia Alumni Association wants to congratulate the College on the selection of Earl Blaik, Harry Ellinger, Joe Donchess, and Andrew Gustafson as the new coaches. What a great group of men! They can't miss.
