The Benjamin F. Barge Gold Medal for public speaking was awarded to Oscar M. Ruebhausen '34, of Washington, Vt., for his oration on "The Changing Temper" on May 15. At the same time, the Class of 1866 Award was given to James B. Gidney 36, of Ridgewood, N. J., for his speech on The Meaning of College Education."
The winners were selected by a faculty committee from a group of six finalists in the two contests. Other speakers in the Barge Contest were Alan E. Hewitt '34, of New York City, and Frank C. Heath Jr. '34, of Weston, West Virginia. Speaking with Gidney in the Class of 1866 Contest were Harold J. Kennedy '35, of Holyoke, Mass., and Raphael H. Silverman '36, of Hanover.
