THE DEFICIT for the year ($46,274.30) was met by drawing on the general fund of the Council, a fund which had been built up in more prosperous times to tide over the activities of the Council during a lean period. The securities in the General Fund had a market value, as of June 30, 1934, of $44,700, which with a secured note of $5,500 and cash in the hands of the graduate treasurer of $501.51 makes the total of the general fund $51,701.51.

The recreational-intramural program, operated during the year ending June 30, 1934 at a net cost to the Council of $29,386.99, was one of impressive magnitude. Almost all members of the freshman and sophomore classes in the College participated in the recreational activities, while many additional juniors and seniors were engaged in intramural contests. In all, over one thousand undergraduates enjoyed the facilities of the athletic plant and personnel in recreational-intramural activities each week day during the entire academic year recently completed. This comprehensive program embraced supervised activities and contests in each of the twelve intercollegiate sports in addition to squash, wrestling, boxing, modified water polo, corrective gymnastics, and courses in life saving operated in conjunction with the Red Cross life saving instruction program.

Approximately five hundred undergraduates of the four classes were engaged in the intercollegiate sports program during the year. A number of men who played on intercollegiate teams and squads during part of the year also enjoyed the recreational-intramural facilities at other times.

The year 1933-1934 was one of great financial difficulty and stress. Nevertheless, it is gratifying to note that the athletic program which has played so large a part in the recent impressive development of the College was adequately maintained and executed through the cooperation of the entire personnel, Council members, and undergraduates despite the severe financial handicaps encountered.
