After having read a couple of issues of Gus Cummings' paper, the "1927 Speakeasy," you will probably wonder how we can prepare a column this month. The truth of the matter is we can't, because Gus has stolen practically all of our thunder. In spite of being terribly fed up, more power to Gus and for a small consideration we might even let him keep it up all year in place of this column.
Geraniums to the New York gang for their organization and enthusiasm and orchids to Guy Bostwick for again reporting their latest doings. The alumni dinner in that fair metropolis brought out some eighteen or twenty members of the class, among whom were Art Keleher, John Shaw, Josh Davis, Herb Howe, Ed Jacobs, Ken Anderson, Doc Wormley, Ed Ruth, Orrie Herwitz, Tom Gillespie, Joe Hardin, Tom Anglem, Bill Williams, Howie Camph, and Les Kilmarx.
On Tuesday, April 16, they held another of their now famous dinners at the Dartmouth Club. If you don't believe these parties are successful, just listen to the list that attended this one. Jack Draper, Ed Dwyer, Tom Gillespie, Orrie Herwitz, Joe Hardin, Art Keleher, Les Kilmarx, Art Lund, Lev Lyons, Bob Page, Pat Partridge, Rudy Preuss, Bob Reinhardt, Herb Rubin, Jack Shaw, Al Welty, Bill Glenn, Hank Bayles, Ed Ruth, Joe Creamer, Fritz Kortlucke, Ken Ballantyne, Sam Wormser, Josh Davis and Guy Bostwick. Now if that doesn't sound like the makings of a party we never went to one. We've tried to run them like that in Boston, but somehow or other the guys up here don't seem to have the domestic situation sufficiently under control to get a night off or something.
Further news from New York informs us that Donald F. McCall Jr. has reached the ripe old age of some eight weeks, and from now on promises to make life miserable for his sisters, Mary and Virginia. That makes three youngsters for the McCall family, and rumor has it that Art Keleher is somewhat fed up at being tied for the record.
Fritz Kortlucke, doctor to you, is now practicing in Kew Gardens, Long Island. While Fritz was studying medicine and incidentally sculpturing at Edinburgh, Scotland, he met, and subsequently married and brought home with him, a most attractive young lady from the Orkney Islands. There is now added to the family a young daughter, Sheila Maria, age seven months.
Herby Howe is now associated with-the New York State Employment Service in New York City.
Vernon Whitney sailed last month for San Juan, Porto Rico, there to manage a date plantation for the Hills Brothers Company, manufacturers of Dromedary Date Products. Until such time as he is permanently located there his address will be care of the company, no Washington St., New York City.
Chuck Field is now sales correspondent for Chicago Vitreous Enamel Product Company in Cicero, Ill.
Buck McKee is working for the Union Trust Company in Indianapolis, Ind.
CLASS DINNER IN BOSTON
At a recent Dartmouth smoker held at the University Club in Boston there were five Twenty-seveners present, including Bill Prescott, Bill Spinney, Bill St. Amant, Phil Fowler, and your Secretary. Also the attendance at our weekly luncheons on Fridays at the Parker House has been reasonably good. Familiar faces there are those of Bob Mix, Shorty Oliver, Frank Coulter, Bob Voorhis, Bill Prescott, Phil Fowler, Bill Spinney, Rog Salinger, Charlie Bartlett, Hans Paschen, and Dinty Gardner.
Gus Cummings has very recently recovered from a tough siege with old man pneumonia and is now, we are most happy to report, doing nicely. In spite of his misfortune, Gus has made a grand start on the Alumni Fund campaign for this year. His plan of attack is the best yet, and with a due amount of co-operation from every one of us 1927 should this year have a record of which it can be proud. Much credit too must be given by us all to his able assistants, Bill Abbott in Chicago and Josh Davis, Orrie Herwitz and Guy Bostwick in New York. The time and effort they are expending deserve our support, and nothing would bring more satisfaction to them for their labors than to have one hundred per cent of contributions from our class.
Secretary, 152 Waban Ave., Waban, Mass.
