Dartmouth's freshman class of 650 men has been assembled from 37 states, the District of Columbia, two United States territories, and three foreign lands, the Dean of Freshmen's annual report on geographic distribution reveals this year. The present first-year class represents one less state and two less foreign lands than the entering class of last year, but is still one of the most widely distributed groups that has entered the College in recent years.
Massachusetts again leads New York in the number of freshmen sent to Dartmouth, the Bay State having a total of 136 to New York's 126. Both states are below last year's figures, Massachusetts by six and New York by seven. The striking gains made last year by California, Washington and Minnesota have been maintained, and notable gains this year have been recorded by Ohio, with 38 men compared to 23 last year; New Jersey, up from 51 to 63; Colorado, up from 2 to 9; lowa, up from 2 to 8; Wisconsin, up from 6 to 12; Maryland, up from 2 to 7; and the District of Columbia, up from 8 to 13.
Three states not represented last year have sent men to Dartmouth this fall: Kentucky, Montana, and West Virginia. The 11 states not represented in the Class of 1940 are Arizona, Georgia, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee and Utah.
Statistics show that the Middle Atlantic States this year are almost tied with the New England States for honors in sectional distribution, having 223 representatives to New England's 237. The Central States. with 134 men, show a gain of 12, while the Rocky Mountain States, with 12, show a gain of 7. Distribution of the freshman class by states follows:
