By bequest of the late Harry B. Thayer '79, life trustee of the College, Dartmouth will receive 150,000 in trust to be designated as the Hopkins Fund. The income from the fund is to be used at the sole and absolute discretion of the President of the College, according to Mr. Thayer's will, with the preference expressed that the income not be used for the running expenses of the College.
As possible uses of the fund, Mr. Thayer's will mentions the making of loans or gifts, the establishing of memorials to distinguished alumni or those who have served the College, or any other use which may be of benefit to the College. It also stipulates that as much of the income as necessary may be used to keep the investments of the principal at the market value of the original gift, and that the President may have a cumulative right to use the income, so that any income not spent in any year may be used in any subsequent year.
Under the terms of another bequest, Dartmouth will receive $5,000 from the estate of the late Anna G. Blodgett of Franklin, N. H., the income to be used for scholarships for boys from Canaan and Franklin. Miss Blodgett, who died on November 5, was the daughter of the late Chief Justice Isaac N. Blodgett of the New Hampshire Supreme Court, who received an honorary degree from Dartmouth in 1870; the neice of Caleb Blodgett '56; and the cousin of Prof. John H. Gerould '9O, now senior member of the Dartmouth faculty.
