The Barrett Cup award for 1936 was made to Dean R. Gidney '36 of Ridgewood, N. J., at the Wet Down ceremonies on May 27. Gidney, who is soccer captain and a member of Palaeopitus, was chosen by the three upper classes of the College as the member of the senior class "giving the greatest promise of becoming a factor in the outside world through his strength of character and qualities of leadership, record of scholarship and broad achievements, and his influence among his fellows."
Gidney is a member of the executive committee of the senior class, secretary of the Interfraternity Council, and a Phi Beta Kappa student, having achieved a perfect 4.0 record for the past two semesters. He was a member of the Health Survey Committee, and last year was a member of Green Key and of his dormitory committee. He won soccer letters for three consecutive seasons, and this past fall was captain of the team. In addition to Palaeopitus, he is a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, Casque and Gauntlet, and the Soccer Club.
Other members of the senior class who were selected by a faculty committee, following preliminary undergraduate nominations, as worthy candidates for the Barrett Cup were: Aldis P. Butler, New Haven, Conn.; Paul S. Cleaveland, Lancaster, N. H.; Donald W. Erion, Buffalo, N. Y.; Albert L. Gibney, Madison, N. J.; Robert S. Morris Jr., La Jolla, Calif.; Robert H. Shertz, Philadelphia, Pa.; and Richard F. Treadway, Williamstown, Mass.
Gidney's name has been engraved on the Barrett Cup, which remains in possession of the College, and a gold medal was presented to him in token of the award.
