The varsity tennis team has engaged in eight matches during the past month, winning five and dropping three to the traditional opponents of Harvard, Yale and Princeton. Victories have been scored over Longwood Cricket Club, M. I. T., Williams, Army, and Columbia.
The New England Intercollegiates at Middletown on May 12-14 gave the Green a sweep of the singles and doubles titles, Paul Guibord, top-ranking player in New England, winning the singles crown and then teaming up with Norm Anderson for the doubles championship. Guibord won his final singles match from A 1 Winston, Amherst captain, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-8, 6-2. The doubles victory was won over Winston and Mahoney of Amherst, 7-5, 6-4. Dartmouth's sweep of the championships placed the Green in the lead for the Association cup which will be awarded permanently to the team first amassing 8 points. Dartmouth now has Yale and Amherst 1. Yale was not entered in this year's matches.
The Dartmouth victories were registered by scores of 8-1 over the Longwood Cricket Club, 9-0 over M. I. T., 7-2 over Williams, 6-3 over Army, and 7-2 over Columbia. The Yale contest was close, going to the Bulldogs by a 5-4 score, while the Harvard match was lost, 8-1, and the Princeton match, 7-2. In winning his singles match against Minnich of Princeton, Guibord closed his Dartmouth career with 17 singles victories and only three losses in three years of varsity play.
