Dartmouth's sputtering but supercharged football team emerged as a gang ofdangerous opportunists when they drownedHarvard, 20 to 2, in the floods and goo ofSoldiers Field on October 23. The Indianshad appeared none too good in givingBrown a 41-0 trouncing the previous Saturday, and the gridiron cognoscenti wereunwilling to give them more than an evenchance against Harvard's powerful andsmoothly drilled eleven. However, youngMr. Hutchinson, whom Bill Cunninghamhas dubbed "Bombshell Bill," took matterspretty much into his own hands and behind the pick-up blocking of his teammates rang up three Green touchdowns.
Late ill the first period he kicked up clouds of spray around Harvard's right flank and scooted 62 yards to score standing up. Early in the third period he dashed through a beautiful opening between tackle and end, danced himself beyond clutching Crimson hands, and completed a 55- yard touchdown run. His third touchdown was a 2-yard smash over tackle after Bob MacLeod's 32-yard scamper and his own ig-yard run had advanced the ball from midfield. To monopolize the scoring for the day, Hutchinson contributed 2 points to Harvard when Daughters nailed him behind the Green goal line late in the third quarter.
Discounting Hutchinson's two long dashes, the statistics were all in favor of Harvard, but the Crimson gridmen could not dent the Green defense when they were within scoring territory, and all their midfield power went for naught. Primed to stop the middle-of-the-line smashes of Struck, the Indians left themselves open to the tackle slants of Macdonald, but MacLeod and Hollingworth handled their secondary defense roles admirably and kept the Crimson sophomore from matching Hutchinson's performance. Gibson and Gates behind the line and Captain Davis and Schildgen in the forward wall were standouts in Dartmouth's spirited defense. The deluge which fell throughout the game rendered the Big Green's passing attack null and void, but despite the sloppy going the team was equal to the occasion and won on the ground. As the Indians head for the Yale classic, they have everyone guessing, including those who know them best.
