Class of 1933
December 1937 John S. Monagan, II

Omitted by inadvertence from our last offering is a clipping from the Boston Herald of Sept. 12 wherein Mrs. Paul Rice's daughter, Charlotte, was reported to have become the bride of Dr. WinstonJudd Roioe. Among the ushers were Mr. Paul Burtis of Brooklyn, N. Y„ and Mr. J. Russell Ackerman of Litchfield, Conn.

We saw Mr. Ackerman recently at a Dartmouth dinner in Waterbury. He expects to be in Hanover for the Festive Fifth.

Printed at the top of the page is this "STANTON H. WHITMAN, Attorney at Law,18 South Main Street, Orange, Massachusetts—Telephone 90."

The message is very brief, but eloquent. Slightly touched with .... pathos (pathos, bathos .... tire, tyre .. . . curb, kerb).

It is: "I am practicing law at the aboveaddress, where I wait patiently for clients, and my present experience indicates thatwhen I buy my next suit I should orderfour pairs of pants."

Ah .... the exuberance, the optimism of youth Four pairs of pants!

WE'D settle for a pair of shorts right now.

O. O. (Odd) Mackey sends the following promised account of the class get-together:

"Last night (Oct. 5) we ran the first of a series of dinners for '33 men, and we had one grand turnout. The place was the Dartmouth Club.

"I asked all those who were present if they intended to return to Hanover in June, and I received a unanimous vote for a return. So you can count on 17 of us who were at the dinner last night.

"Those present were:

"Bill Lewis, Paul Wetstein, Gay Millius,Dave Evans, Art Oesterheld, Randy Valensi, Chet Thompson, Mel Katz, GeorgeHamilton, Charles Grob, Howe Wheelock,Jacques Mohr, Dick Graves, Dave Flynn,John Masten, Dick Rocker.

"Paul Wetstem is arranging scores for Tommy Dorsey, and his comments about his job were most interesting.

"Gay Milius had his first song published. It is called 'Heavenly.' He wrote the lyrics. So Don Cobleigh's music course was not a total loss after all.

"We are definitely intending to organize 1933 so that when we get back in June we won't have to rack our brains to recall names of classmates."

WASHINGTON MERRY-GO-ROUND

Page Worthington after a silence of four years bursts into print with the following somewhat risque story of affairs among the men of 1933 in the nation's capital:

" .... I am still laboring for good old Mother Bell, this being my fourth year of servitude. Last Nov. 7 I deserted the ranks, marrying Mary Johnson of Germantown, Pa. (nice going, kid). At present we are living in Colonial Village, Arlington, Va„ and any '33ers in the neighborhood are welcome.

"Our class has certainly made itself felt in this section of the world. On Dartmouth Night, we held a reunion, and such famous faces as Hobbs, Await, Lyon, Milans,Sager, Reeves, Pimper, and Hagan made their appearance. As the evening began to reach its height, King and Reynolds breezed in from Richmond. It is to be regretted that a picture of the famous Hagan, bacchanalian lip is not forthcoming, for it really put in an appearance when the Glee Club went to town on 'Dartmouth undying.' His last coherent words were, 'Who wants to drive to Hanover?' It is also rumored that the 'dark brown curtain' descended on one of our class officers in the general vicinity of Alexandria, Va., on the drive back to Richmond. (Obviously the rankest kind of hearsay. Ed. note.)

"A few shots on some of our friends. .... Winnie Hobbs is now a fullfledged lawyer, working with the corpora tion Trust Co.... Fred Await is studying for the Foreign Service .... ditto Pete Hart, who spends much time with the State Department Cal Milans is preparing for the bar exams in December.

.... Jimmy Pimper has just passed said exam and is now engaged in that favorite pastime of looking around DickLyon is a lawyer and working with his father Sager has the real estate market under control Larry Reeves is our dirt King (sand and gravel magnate) Bob Hagan on the Bureau of Press Intelligence It is rumored that Ed Staudt and Harold Payne are in town, but we have never caught up with them.

"Bill King announced the arrival of a daughter in July."

Seen at the Yale game were: Smart, H.Smith, Donner, Doscher, Hagan, andEckels. Hagan very bountifully offered us a $3,500 a year job .... in Washington. He is known as White House Bobby now, and is said to be very close to the President, due to his ability to perform on the zither and to tell droll stories.

Bob Guggenheim who, as we told you last year, decided that Smelting and Refining were not for him, writes to give us the low down on his jaunt to Los Angeles:

. The call of Hollywood was too great to resist, and I quit the Smelting Company to become a third assistant director at one of the studios—this about a year ago. I worked on three or four pictures as second assistant and then got a break at the aoth Century-Fox, where I am now an assistant producer.

"The work is swell, although the hours, at times twenty without stopping, are tough. However, it seems to be the only job at which I am completely happy, and that is about all one can ask for.

"Parmer Maxwell has joined the matrimonial ranks, marrying Betty Anthony on September 22 at Dallas, Texas."

After Christmas we'll start serious organization for reunion.

Don't spend all your dough on that mink coat that the little woman has had her eye on. Save some of it for that big week-end in June.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

HAPPY NEW YEAR
