The Sunday Times, New Brunswick, N. J., June 12, contained this item. "Two Rutgers professors, who were teaching at the University almost a half-century ago, were honored at the alumni luncheon yesterday, by receiving medal and citation. One was Edwin B. Davis, of the Department of Romance Languages. He was honored as 'diligent scholar and devoted teacher' who had brought to Rutgers men 'a great appreciation of the cultural values reflected in the Romance languages and a better understanding of the peoples that employ these tongues; an achievement of significance in a world which desperately needs breadth of vision and tolerance among nations.' .... In July "E. B." went to Hanover for study and spent several weeks there. He wrote, "I am enchanted with the equipment of the Baker Library and the insurpassable arrangements for private study." I had a pleasant chat with him at the Library, Aug. 24, interrupting his routine for a half-hour. He looked well and was enthusiastic about his work A recent newspaper advertisement showed that Flagg (and Wheeler) planned to sell at auction, in Marblehead, a large collection of household furniture and antiques. Query: did their move to their new home on West Shore Drive convince them that they had too much furniture, or have they been accumulating quietly, over a period of years, rare old pieces for the joy of collecting and final sale? .... A Boston newspaper, in late August, referred to Professor and Mrs. Charles D. Hazen, among others present at a tea in Magnolia. The Hazens have been at this North Shore town many times in past years Wellman, with wife and daughter, Harriet, sailed from New York, early in June, for a Scandinavian cruise. The extent of travel has not been reported, nor the date of return, which was before the middle of August. .... Wheat spent July and August at Marblehead, except for a brief trip to the White Mountains and Hanover. Twice he came in town and we lunched together. Although he has already reached the age of possible retirement from the bench, he has no definite plans so to do.
