DARTMOUTH'S NEW cut system, abolishing the old plan of enforced class attendance, went into effect for all four undergraduate classes with the start of the college year on September 28. Under the revised and less rigid requirements, class attendance becomes largely a matter of individual adjustment between the instructor and the student, and the old system of allowing two, three, six, unlimited or no cuts depending upon the students' grades gives way to "unlimited" cuts for all. Penalties will continue to be meted out to those lax students who are reported by their instructors, and a new schedule of these has been devised by the Committee on Administration.
In voting through the new cut system the faculty aimed to change the students' attitude from that of having a definite number of cuts to use up to that of being responsible for the course material presented at every class.
