THROUGH THE Friends of Dartmouth Library, two important gifts have recently been made to Baker Library. Mrs. Bella C. Landauer of New York City, mother of James D. Landauer '23, has presented several volumes from the library of the late J. Theodore Marriner 'l4, including his class books and collections of correspondence; and Herbert F. West '22, professor of Comparative Literature at Dartmouth, has presented his collection of R. B. Cunninghame Graham, perhaps the most complete in existence.
The Herbert Faulkner West Collection of R. B. Cunninghame Graham contains 123 items, the most important item being the 130 letters which the late English author wrote to Professor West. In the collection are 51 volumes of Cunninghame Graham's works, 11 pamphlets, 34 volumes with prefaces by Cunninghame Graham, 12 volumes about Cunninghame Graham, three of them by Professor West, and 15 miscellaneous items.
The Friends of the Dartmouth Library, endorsed by the Dartmouth Alumni Council, was organized last spring to encourage gifts to Baker Library of original or rare material. The new association hopes to obtain complete collections, rare volumes, manuscripts, diaries, letters and pamphlets from sources to which the Library ordinarily does not have access. It is expected that most of this material will be kept either in the rare book department or in the Treasure Room of Baker Library.
