IN CONFORMITY with our custom, we are passing along to you something that is a bit apart from class news but none the less interesting Director of Athletics Bill McCarter, in his talk at the Secretaries Meeting said, "I am thoroughly satisfied that, as far as the recruiting of athletic material is concerned, our intention of fair and honorable practice is surpassed by none, and our performance is as legitimate as that of the cleanest of our league neighbors. On the other hand, our present success in eastern athletics has caused some envy and criticism, and is certain to cause more if our teams remain, as I have every reason to expect with our present fine coaching staff, among the leaders in eastern college athletics. We have reached a point, in my opinion, where we need to make concessions to none on the grounds of athletic purity or desirability as competitors. This does not mean, however, that we should cease to question ourselves. If we maintain to the world an integrity of purpose, we have a great obligation to our own consciences to assure ourselves, on the basis of the most accurate possible data, that our position is justified, and to exert every effort to control our own actions and those of our adherents, that no procedures shall be indulged in that may be construed by even the most critical as violating the best code of amateurism." ...It is our humble opinion that Bill, who trained for his athletic directorship within the academic walls of Baker Library, is doing a grand, good job In fact, Dartmouth athletics are in a healthy condition, with some nice boys being coached by able men A few less victories throughout this present year would still leave the situation sound and all right.

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUNGJACK SICKMAN on winning his Eagle Scout badge....those who have seen Jack at reunions formed a high regard for the clean-cut youngster who now stands 6 ft. at 16 yrs he is of the type that goes places in the world .... by the way, Eddie's home address is now goo Ridge St., Port Chester, N. Y Micky Holmes and wife made a brief call en route back to N. J. after getting young Bill started as a freshman at Hanover Lawyer Ed Paul lives at Leamington Hotel, Minneapolis, has offices at 710 Security Building.

GORDON GLIDDEN, one of the experts at the now famous Eye Clinic in Hanover, told us that our mention of Russ Meredith's eye operations which permitted straightening of his neck had brought them additional business It seems that three different people read the 1910 column story, became interested, finally went to Hanover for similar operations and relief While in Hanover to see his son graduate, Howard Fogg (with Andy Scarlett) drove out to Etna for a visit with Nat Emerson, a highly respected citizen of his community Nat makes such fine maple syrup that "Misty" took a couple of gallons back to Illinois with him.

WINSOR WILKINSON and wife extend a hearty and alluring invitation to all Tenners attending the Stanford Game to attend a 1910 Class Breakfast.... but let's get the record right by quoting from his letter, "We understand that the schedule for the Dartmouth Special has been moved up so that it will arrive early Friday morning. I am therefore planning a 1910 Class Breakfast at my home. As you doubtless know, Berkeley is on the main line of the Southern Pacific, a few miles and some fifty minutes from San Francisco. I propose to have Tenners leave their respective trains there, take them home by automobile, and later in the morning to San Francisco over the Bay Bridge. Tenners from the south should come up from Los Angeles either on 'The Owl' or 'The Oakland Lark.' I have already had an acceptance from Chan and Mrs. Baxter, and I would appreciate your using the means at your disposal to extend our invitation to all members of the class and their wives for this Class Breakfast. I shall be glad to make these invitations personal and direct to those who expect to be here for the Pow Wow and game, but I'd like to have some idea who are coming." ...It is mighty fine of Wilk and Mrs. Wilkinson to extend such an invitation, and we hope that many Tenners avail themselves of it. Anyone going should write direct to him at 1955 Marin Ave., Berkeley, Calif.

HARRY BEAL'S new address is care Sullivan Machinery Co., Woodland Ave., Michigan City, Ind Harry is the Big Shot of that outfit Rollie Reynolds, who lectures, radios, teaches, decries "muzzled thought," protesting against public agencies that have "muzzled" individual thinking in this country as well as in Europe This now famous gent, who was well educated in Dartmouth's Shurtleff House, blasted forth to the N. Y. State Congress of Parents and Teachers, "The purpose of a school should not be to make children memorize; it should make them think for themselves, a most difficult accomplishment As I sailed around the world last year, I found countries in Asia and Europe whose people are afraid to express their thoughts, and whose rulers acclaim that they, the leaders, shall do the thinking for the people. Nor is this condition lacking in our own democratic America. Too often in the past have industry, the church, the university disposed of or muzzled those who would think for themselves. Too often false leaders propose the millennium if only America will let them do her thinking. The American school should be the abiding place of free inquiry."

A POST CARD from Charlie Noone, mailed in Edinburgh, September 26, gives the class interesting news, "Wife, daughter, and I have been looking up ancestry in the good old Emerald Isle. Dublin is exquisite. Scotland is up and (Secy's note: At this point Charlie's penmanship approaches Pineo Jackson's illegibility.... the word might be quaggy, queer, or what not, dependent upon how much Scotch the reader has), but there is a quaint charm which is infectious. Headed toward London and home."

TOM STEWARD, who is director of University of Minnesota News Service and editor of Minnesota Chats, a monthly paper sent to the parents of all students, is writing a history of the Mayo Clinic. ... A belated obituary of John Douglas appears in the Necrology section John, a highly respected citizen of Methuen, Mass., town clerk for 17 years and prominent in civic affairs, died April 28, but we did not obtain details until recently.

THE NEWS RESERVOIR is running low....we need items about yourself, your family, other Tenners.... shoot some in....or you'll be looking at blank space.
