NAT WOODWARD, patriarch of Hanover's town characters, died at the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital on November 19, from injuries received three days earlier when he was struck by a car as he shuffled across Main Street in the early-evening darkness. He was 75 years old and had spent most of his life in the environs of Hanover.
"Old Nat" was a familiar figure to thousands of Dartmouth men, and although he was a favorite subject for parody, the College's genuine affection for him was clearly indicated by the continuous inquiries which students and faculty members made about his condition following the accident. Nat's latter years were spent in tending a garden at the southern end of town and in reminiscing toothlessly to any student audience which might assemble near his favorite headquarters at the Tanzi fruit store.
