Class of 1883
April 1938 Alfred E. Watson, Esq.

The notable and unprecedented service of the late Hon. John W. Gordon as a state legislator and as mayor of the city of Barre during his lifetime is being duplicated in part as a legislator and exceeded in mayoralty service by his son, John A. Gordon '19, who was elected for the fifth successive time as mayor of his home city in the annual election on March 1. He is the present representative from the city of Barre in the Vermont General Assembly, and was one of the leading legislators during the last session of that body. His political support is unquestionably personal to a large degree, as he had little, if any, opposition in his last election. His political proclivities are Democratic, whereas his father was an Independent Republican.

Alfred E. Watson was elected as moderator of the town of Hartford for the fortythird successive time at the annual town meeting this year. He was also elected as one of the town grand jurors for the ensuing year.

William E. Cushman, immediately following his graduation and until 1902, taught school in California, when he returned to his home town and engaged in a successful real estate business. After marrying in 1908, he settled in the delightful summer resort village of Hyannis, Mass., where he and his wife are taking life easy, being blessed with comfortable health and circumstances.

"Billy" was an outstanding baseball shortstop among the college players in his day, but he is of a modest temperament and has stopped short of sending me any data concerning himself, as he has answered none of my numerous communications.

The prospect of having a considerably large attendance of the surviving members of our class at the fifty-fifth anniversary reunion, next June, does not appear very flattering.

Seven classmates have died since the 50th reunion, Niles, Chellis, Gay, Pearson, McCrillis, Pickard, and Greeley.

The surviving members of the class are largely scattered. Their present residences are as follows: Massachusetts, 8; Vermont, a; New Hampshire, a; Maryland, a; California, a; New York, Illinois, Michigan, Texas, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii, 1 each.

The present residences of non-graduates so far as known are as follows:

Massachusetts, a; New York, a; New Hampshire, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Louisiana, 1 each.
